Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Overview
In December 2008 the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia joined with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. to oversee the Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of the former principal of Tabb High School. The scholarship provides a one-time, non-renewable $500 award for qualifying high school seniors from Bruton High School, Grafton High School, Tabb High School, York High School, and York River Academy.
About Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr.
Mike Tylavsky was a well-regarded educator and administrator in York County, retiring after 26 years of service. After retirement he served as principal at North Moore High School in North Carolina. He died of cancer in 2007 at age 58. He was known for his strength of character, directness, and for encouraging students to “do the right thing.” His creative leadership positively affected many students and left a lasting mark on the community.
Purpose
In keeping with Mr. Tylavsky’s values and wishes, this memorial fund is intended to help a student from a working-family background who may otherwise be unable to continue their education and who plans to pursue a career in health or technology.
Eligibility and Criteria
- Applicant must be a high school senior at one of the York County schools listed above (Bruton, Grafton, Tabb, York, or York River Academy).
- Applicant must be planning a career in health and/or technology and demonstrate financial need.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.75 is required.
Award Details and Deadline
- The scholarship is a single, non-renewable award of $500, paid in full for the first semester.
- Application deadline: April 16, 2026.
