Jewish Community Foundation College Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford
College Scholarship Program — Jewish Community Foundation
Overview
The Jewish Community Foundation awards nearly $100,000 each year in college and graduate school scholarships funded by individual donors. Each donor establishes the terms for their fund, but all share the objective of helping students with academic promise and limited financial means pursue higher education. Scholarships may be used toward tuition, fees, room and board.
Award amounts
Individual awards typically range from $1,000 to $3,000.
Who is eligible
Before applying, confirm that you meet the basic requirements below. Individual scholarship funds may add additional conditions (for example, preferred fields of study or community service history); your single application will be evaluated against those specific fund criteria and matched where appropriate.
Basic criteria
- Most scholarship funds require applicants to be Jewish.
- For purposes of eligibility this generally means at least one parent is Jewish and the applicant self-identifies as Jewish, or the applicant has completed a formal conversion to Judaism.
- Must be accepted to, or currently enrolled at, an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States (or in a program affiliated with a U.S. institution).
- Must be a current resident of the Greater Hartford, Connecticut region.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
Special fund exceptions
- Anne E. Wall Scholarship: open to all Bloomfield, CT residents with demonstrated financial need, regardless of religious affiliation.
- June Miller Rosenblatt Scholarship: open to Greater Hartford residents with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing a major that prepares them for a career in education, regardless of religious affiliation.
Application process
There is a single application form that covers all Foundation-administered scholarships. Complete only one application to be considered for all eligible funds. Incomplete submissions may not be reviewed. Previous recipients are welcome to reapply but should not assume continued funding.
Apply online via the Foundation’s college scholarship application form. If you have questions, email grants@jcfhartford.org.
Timing, review, and notification
- The application opens in January for awards for the coming academic year.
- Applications must be submitted by May 15.
- The Scholarship Committee evaluates submissions anonymously and considers each applicant for the funds for which they are eligible.
- Applicants are typically notified of award decisions (approved or denied) in late June.
Confidentiality
Scholarship awards are kept confidential. A recipient’s identity will only be shared with others if the recipient gives explicit permission.
Recipient expectations
Unless prevented by illness or other emergency, scholarship recipients are expected to complete the academic year for which the award was made. If a recipient does not complete that year without an approved excuse, they will be required to refund the scholarship amount paid on their behalf. Recipients are also asked to send thank-you letters to the donors who made their awards possible.
