At first glance, the legal profession may appear monotonous. However, budding lawyers are encouraged to delve into the history of legal representation to uncover a more diverse spectrum of professional representation than initially anticipated.

Shook & Stone, in collaboration with our personal injury attorneys in Las Vegas, urge students to understand the significance of representation in the legal sector. As such, the firm is delighted to offer its “An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters” Scholarship. This scholarship awards $2,500 to a determined student who can:

  • Set a benchmark for the characteristics, conduct, and principles that lawyers should embody.
  • Examine the history of the legal profession and pinpoint representative attorneys who meet these standards.

Students have until January 1, 2026, to submit a 1,000-word essay outlining their vision of an ideal lawyer.

Application Process for the “An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters” Scholarship

To apply for the An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters Scholarship, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Enrollment or acceptance at an accredited United States trade school, college, university, or graduate school is mandatory.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • Submission of a transcript from your current school is necessary. First-year college students, graduate students, or recent school transferees may submit an unofficial transcript from their current school, along with the most recent official transcript from their previous school. High school students must also provide proof of acceptance to a college or university.
  • Agreement to the scholarship’s terms and conditions is compulsory.
  • All essential scholarship materials, including an original essay of no more than 1,000 words, must be submitted by the January 1, 2026, deadline.

Regrettably, Shook & Stone cannot accept applications submitted without all materials or by students who do not meet the above criteria. Similarly, applications submitted after the January 1, 2026, deadline will not be considered.

Scholarship Essay Topic

When crafting an essay for the An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters Scholarship, please:

  • Outline the characteristics of an ideal lawyer.
  • Provide an example of a lawyer you know or admire who fits the profile you’ve described.

Your essay should not exceed 1,000 words. When submitting your essay for consideration, please include a unique and engaging title, a bibliography as necessary, in-line citations, and a header with the following details:

  • Your full name
  • Your student ID number
  • The name of the An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters Scholarship
  • The name of the academic institution you’re enrolled in or accepted at
  • The mailing address of that institution’s financial aid office
  • The email address and phone number of the institution’s financial aid office

The scholarship selection committee also requests that students save their essays using the following naming convention: “[Scholarship Name and Year] – [Student Name].”

AI Usage Notice

Shook & Stone insists that students create entirely original scholarship essays. Please refrain from using AI to generate a scholarship essay for the “An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters” Scholarship. Misuse of AI will result in the student’s application being disqualified.

Scholarship Application Submission Deadline

Students have until January 1, 2026, 12:00 a.m. EST, to complete and submit their scholarship applications. Shook & Stone will not accept applications submitted after this deadline.

The scholarship selection committee will then take up to three months to select a winner from the applicants who applied for the “An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters” Scholarship. Please refrain from contacting Shook & Stone for updates about the status of a student’s application during this period.

Terms and Conditions

All applicants to this scholarship must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined on the scholarship application page, including:

  • Applicants must be enrolled at a college, trade school, university, or graduate school.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.
  • Applicants must have residency in the United States.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing.
  • Applicants must submit some personal information, including name, contact information, and academic information.
  • Applicants must author an original essay on the scholarship topic provided.

The following individuals are NOT eligible to apply:

  • Employees or children of employees of Shook & Stone
  • Past recipients of the An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters Scholarship
  • Applicants who are unable/unwilling to be interviewed by a representative of Shook & Stone if they were to be awarded a scholarship
  • Applicants who submit the same essay for multiple scholarships or for multiple years in a row

Selection and Award Notification Process

The scholarship selection committee will review each applicant’s essay and evaluate the essay’s adherence to the scholarship prompt, as well as its quality. The committee will select the scholarship winner based on the complexity and creativity of thought demonstrated in the scholarship question.

Age, race, religion, gender, national origin, familial status, or other protected classes will not influence the committee’s decision.

Once the committee selects its winner, a representative will contact that student and arrange for the scholarship to be sent to the academic institution of their choice. Unfortunately, the committee will not individually contact non-winning students. Students can monitor the Shook & Stone website for an announcement declaring the scholarship winner.
