Introduction Brown Bass & Jeter is a full-service litigation firm based in Jackson, Mississippi, proudly owned and led by Black women. The firm’s partners are pioneers who share a conviction that strengthening and revitalizing local communities is essential to wider social progress. In support of that mission, Brown Bass & Jeter is pleased to offer two $1,000 scholarships for college or other post-secondary students who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to community improvement. Who should apply This award targets emerging leaders from a variety of backgrounds who are actively working to make a positive difference. Applicants may range from first-year undergraduates to third-year law students. We’re interested in candidates who can point to concrete examples—such as student organizations, internships, jobs, or volunteer activities—that show initiative, leadership potential, and dedication to community service. Essay prompt and requirements Write an original essay of 1,000 words on the following prompt. At the top of your essay, clearly state the chosen topic. Prompt: Many effective leaders are driven and resolute about their causes. Describe a cause you are passionate about and explain how you have—or how you would—lead others to care about it. - Your essay must be submitted as a PDF along with your scholarship application. - Include the essay topic at the top of the document. - Essay length: 1,000 words exactly (essays not meeting the word count will not be considered). Submission details - Award: Two scholarships of $1,000 each. - Essay length: 1,000 words. - File format: PDF. - File naming convention: FirstName_LastName_BBJ_Scholarship_2026.pdf - Essays that fail to meet the word count or PDF format requirements will be disqualified. Eligibility - Minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. - Applicants must be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an accredited undergraduate, graduate, or community college program in the United States. - If you are a high school senior, you must include an acceptance letter from the college or university you plan to attend.
